Welcome to the Northwestern Institute for Sustainable Practices (NiSP). NiSP promotes interdisciplinary education and research into economically, environmentally, and socially sound policies and practices that will help secure the earth's natural resources for use now and far into the future. By convening experts from many disciplines, NiSP works to develop the integrated approaches that are essential for a swift transition to sustainable practices, in sectors ranging from energy to transportation to urban planning and ecological restoration.

Thomas Gladwin
Visiting Faculty 

NiSP welcomed Dr. Thomas Gladwin, professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. Professor Gladwin was in residence at Northwestern University October 19-22 and delivered engaging and thought-provoking lectures to students and faculty at Tech, Kellogg, and the Law School. The focus of his remarks was  on transforming and shaping minds to ensure sustainable leadership and a sustainable future. Thanks to Professor Gladwin for stimulating important discussions.

Sustainability Seminar Series
Assistant Professor Luisa Marcelino of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department delivered a well-attended lecture on Coral Bleaching and Lessons on Making a Happy Coral-Algae Partnership, as part of the ongoing Sustainability Seminar Series. 

2009-10 Dow Student Sustainability Innovation Competition
NiSP is again sponsoring this competition designed to reward innovations in sustainable design. Projects should blend applied science and engineering with business thinking, and should be interdisciplinary in nature. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2010. Coming Soon: Regulating Nanotechnology: Creating Laws and Legal Institutions for Uncertain Risks, inspired by NiSP's recent Research Roundtable and featuring contributions by Northwestern faculty, this volume uses insights from the sciences, law, economics, psychology and philosophy to discuss how to achieve sustainable development of new, beneficial technologies, while avoiding or minimizing health and environmental risks.

Kimberly Gray is the 2008-2010 Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer on Energy and Sustainability.

Sustainability Domain Dinner - Nov. 16, 2009, 5:30 pm. - NiSP Faculty Kimberly Gray , David Dana, and Klaus Weber, along with Daniel Diermeier as moderator, will present a domain dinner on understanding sustainability from a multi-disciplinary perspective, with the goal of prompting discussion on how academic research can illuminate connections between politics, policy, and science.
